Novice I (7th grade) is intended to introduce students to basic concepts of language study, to familiarize them with the cultures in which Spanish is used and to begin the process of building a foundation in vocabulary and grammar which will allow them to communicate in Spanish.  Traditional teacher-centered instruction is supplemented with student projects, use of the language laboratory for both drill and listening comprehension exercises, and reading selections.  Units of study include telling time, describing themselves and their friends and families, ordering in a restaurant, asking for and giving information with regard to weather, daily schedules and activities.

Students are expected to master the simple present tense; however, as the need arises other tenses may be introduced for comprehension only.  Even at this early stage of language acquisition, students are encouraged to use the language independently to express themselves.   Since reading and oral comprehension are receptive skill areas and receptive skills generally precede productive skills, expectations for student performance are more extensive than they are for writing or speaking.

In this course, students will reach two course benchmarks:

  1. Students will be able to know the understanding of the principle of agreement and word association as tools for understanding and communication by describing multiple facets of an item or a scene.
  2. Students will be able to know the way to research in language class (including prior knowledge) and how it can be used appropriately to create original work in Spanish by producing a multi-faced presentation in the present tense, accurately documenting sources.

Novice II (8th grade) is a course designed to help students to express and to comprehend simple command forms, personal preferences, object pronouns and many common idiomatic expressions.  Students will  also begin to study the past tense as it is used to tell stories, to give personal histories and to describe occurrences. Students will use their foundation of vocabulary and grammar that will allow them to communicate in Spanish.   Units of study include present tense of verbs (reg/irreg), simple past tense, commands and directions, prepositions, professions, house and housechores and  short stories.

Independent use of the language will continue to be an overarching goal of the program, and students will be encouraged to speak and write creatively in Spanish.  Hands-on projects and interdisciplinary work will help students make connections between the language they are learning and other aspects of their lives.  Students completing this level of language instruction will be prepared for the Intermediate level at the High School.

In this course, students will reach tow course benchmarks:

       1.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the principle of agreement, of the way in which shifts in conjugation identify different speakers and time periods, and the value of accessing words and phrases
from various sources by applying them to a short, non-scripted two-way conversation.
       2.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the way in which cultural knowledge, language skills, and research methods can be combined by producing a detailed description of a location outside of the
            United States.
